| | Chico's history in the "movie biz" is quite rich, spanning nearly 100 years. In 1938, Chico's Bidwell Park served as "Sherwood Forest" in the classic The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. After the film was completed, Chico celebrated by dedicating the north section of Ivey Street to the company by renaming it Warner Street. For more movie history, scroll down.

The Chase (1966) Recently remade in Los Angeles with Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson, the original was filmed in Chico and starred some of Hollywoods most prominent actors of all time: Marlon Brando, Angie Dickenson, Jane Fonda, E.G. Marshall and Robert Redford.
Friendly Persuasion (1955) click here for info Filmed in Bidwell Park and at the M & T Ranch, this movie starred Gary Cooper, Anthony Perkins, Dorothy McGuire and Marjorie Main. It is the story of a Quaker family caught up in the Civil War.
Purple Mask (1955) click here for info Universal Studios shot this swashbuckling Napoleonic epic starring Tony Curtis, Gene Barry and Angela Lansbury in the northeast grove of Sycamore Pool in Bidwell Park.
Red Badge of Courage (1951) click here for info Based on the novel written by Stephen Crane, this is the story of a young soldier discovering courage and the effects of the war. It was filmed at the boat launch on the Sacramento River, near Scottys, and also in Bidwell Park. The film starred Audie Murphy and war-time cartoonist Bill Mauldin and was directed by Academy Award winner John Houston.
Magic Town (1947) click here for info Jimmy Stewart made Chico Depot famous when he stepped off the train into Chico in this RKO film that also starred Jane Wyman and Kent Smith. This is the story of a pollster who discovers the perfect small town that reflects all of Americas trends. Eventually the town is spoiled by all of the media attention.
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) click here for info Another war-time movie, this MGM film took place over a rice paddy located just south of Chico. Two of Hollywoods most desirable leading men at the time, Van johnson and Spencer Tracy, starred.
Salute to the Marines (1943) click here for info Filmed on the Feather River, Fay Beiter, Wallace Beery and Reginald Owen co-starred in this morale boosting military flick. The bridge used in the movie was destroyed under special army supervision during filming. The movie premiered at Chicos own Senator Theater as a benefit and raised $300,000 in war bonds.
Waterloo Bridge (1940) click here for info Vivian Leigh and Robert Taylor returned to Chico to make this MGM movie. Many sites around Chico were used, including Bidwell Park, Pentz Road and M&T Ranch.
Thin Man (1939) Taking place inside Bidwell Mansion, this movie reunited William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, a comedic husband and wife detective team. This was one of five sequels made.
Gone With the Wind (1939) click here for info One of the most famous love stories of all time was filmed at Richardson Springs Resort, Bidwell Park and Golf Course, Pentz Road and in a Paradise apple orchard. The story of Scarlet OHara and Rhett Butler in Civil War-torn Georgia starred Clark Gable, Vivian Leigh, Olivia De Havilland and Leslie Howard.
Stand Up and Fight (1938) click here for info Another MGM movie, this one was filmed in Jonesville, Butte Meadows, Sterling City and Chico. It starred Helen Broderic, Wallace Griffith, Florence Rice, Robert Taylor and two to three hundred Chicoan extras.
Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) click here for info Starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Claude Rains and Basil Rathbone, this movie made Bidwell Park known as Sherwood Forest forever. Wander around the park and look for Robin Hood Glade, located on the north side of Big Chico Creek near where Highway 99 crosses the park. Big Chico Creek is also the location of the fight scene between Robin Hood and Little John. After being finished, Chico celebrated by throwing a big party for Warner Brothers and dedicated the north part of Ivy Street to the Company, renaming it Warner Street.
Gold is Where You Find It (1937) click here for info George Brent and Olivia de Havilland starred in this Warner Brothers film that took place in a studio that was recreated to look exactly like the inside of Bidwell Mansion. Pictures were taken of the mansion and then recreated to exact detail since the studio couldnt afford to shoot on location.
Folly of a Life of Crime (1913) click here for info The first known movie filmed in Chico! It was filmed at the church on 6th and Flume and in Bidwell Park, near the golf course. Special permission was granted by Annie Bidwell herself. It is the autobiographical story of Chris Evans and George and John Sontag, three of Californias worst criminals. John was killed by vigilantes and Chris and George were sent to prison. The two remaining decided to make and star in this film about their life of crime. They later built a movie studio in Oroville.
